What is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment is a dental procedure that is performed to save a damaged or infected tooth. During this procedure, the dentist removes the infected or damaged tissue (known as the pulp) from the center of the tooth and then cleans, disinfects, and seals the inside of the tooth. The purpose of this treatment is to prevent the spread of infection, relieve pain, and preserve the structure of the tooth.
Why Do You Need Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment is necessary when the pulp inside the tooth becomes infected or inflamed due to a deep cavity, injury, or other factors. If left untreated, the infection can spread, causing pain, swelling, and other symptoms. In severe cases, the infection can lead to an abscess (a pocket of pus), which can be extremely painful and even life-threatening.
What to Expect During Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment typically requires one or two appointments, depending on the severity of the infection and the number of roots in the tooth. During the first appointment, the dentist will numb the area around the tooth and then make an opening in the top of the tooth to access the pulp. The infected or damaged pulp is then removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected. Once the tooth is thoroughly cleaned, the dentist will place a temporary filling in the opening and then send you home. At your second appointment, the dentist will remove the temporary filling and replace it with a permanent filling or crown, depending on the location and strength of the tooth.
Is Root Canal Treatment Painful?
One of the biggest misconceptions about root canal treatment is that it is painful. However, this simply isn't true. In fact, root canal treatment is designed to relieve pain, not cause it. During the procedure, the dentist will numb the area around the tooth, so you shouldn't feel any discomfort. After the procedure, you may experience some mild discomfort or sensitivity, but this should go away within a few days.
